PetFeedCalc started with a simple frustration: figuring out how much to feed a dog shouldn't require a spreadsheet.
Pet food labels give you a range. Your vet gives you a number. The internet gives you twelve conflicting opinions. We wanted a calculator that just does the math, using the same formulas veterinarians use, and shows you the result without trying to sell you something first.
The feeding calculator uses the National Research Council's resting energy requirement (RER) formula: 70 x (body weight in kg)^0.75. We then apply activity and life-stage multipliers based on published veterinary guidelines and AAFCO nutritional standards. The breed reference table uses typical weight ranges from AKC breed standards paired with calorie estimates for moderately active, neutered adults.
All calculations run in your browser. We don't store your dog's information on our servers.
We reference data from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the National Research Council's "Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats" (2006), and USDA nutritional databases. You can explore the raw data on our Data page.
PetFeedCalc is free. We earn revenue through affiliate links to pet food retailers and pet insurance providers. These links are clearly disclosed. They don't affect the calculator's output. For details, see our Affiliate Disclosure.
We build calculators, not diagnoses. PetFeedCalc gives you a solid starting point based on real formulas, but your vet knows your dog. Always consult a veterinarian for diet changes, especially if your dog has health issues.
